Dixieland
42.mp3 The original Jazz which came from St Louis and the Deep south of America and originated from the black American Slaves from the plantations. The line up for this kind of band consisted of Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone and a rhythm section of String Bass, Drums, Piano and or banjo.
Boogie -woogie
40a.mp3 A distinctive style of piano jazz playing made famous by Fats Domino the American Jazz Pianist.
Impressionist
30b.mp3 A style of music from the early 20th Century which attempted to imitate in sound what artists such as Monet and Degas did with paint. by giving an impression of a scene or story. Much of this music used the whole tone scale. e.g. the works of Debussy.
Minimalist

Classical Music

Music composed between 1750 - 1815 approx. is called classical music. Main composers were Mozart and Haydn and Beethoven's early music. The excerpt is by Mozart.

Scherzo
59.mp3 Literally means a joke, a very fast movement, with three beats in the bar which replaced the Minuet in the Symphony at the end of the classical period .
Cantata
41.mp3 Generally a short vocal composition accompanied usually by an orchestra (and continuo in the Baroque period), which tells a story through the us of recitative, aria and chorus. In the 17th & 18th centuries there were two types. Cantata da Cheisa, religious text for church use, and Cantata da Camera, secular text for Concert performance. Oratorio
38.mp3 An extended composition which usually had text based of Bible stories, and contained recitative, aria, duets and choruses. Listen to an example of a chorus.

Passion

Chorale
41.mp3 A German Lutheran church hymn much favoured by J.S.BACH in many of his religious compositions, many of his Cantatas are built around these compositions. Listen to this example of a chorale.

Chorus
