Harmonics
The high eerie like sounds produced on a bowed string instrument by lightly touching the string at certain points. On a guitar this will sound “bell like”.
Consort
An old English word,form the renaissance and early Baroque periods for a group of instruments or chamber ensemble. A Whole consort applies to one family of instruments such as Viols or Recorders, while a Broken consort applies to mixed families.
Coloratura
Term for high, florid, vocal singing involving scales, runs and ornaments. Sometimes these passages were written down, but often were extemproised by the performer.
Sprechgesang
A technique used in vocal music where the singer is required to use the voice in an expressive manner half way between singing and spaeaking. It appears in a number of pieces by schoenberg and Berg (early 20th century).
